Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops

Sou apaixonada por Cole Porter desde... nem sei, faz tanto tempo que nem me lembro mais. Junto com os irmãos Gershwin, ele é responsável pela consolidação do chamado Great American Songbook, algo como uma MPB norte-americana.

Muito se fala sobre Cole Porter: rico, esbanjador, homossexual, bissexual. Os adjetivos unânimes, porém, são sofisticado, talentoso, essencial. Sua vida virou duas cinebiografias, filmadas em 1946 e 2004. Responsável por dezenas de canções de sucesso, como Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love), I've Got You Under My Skin e You Do Something to Me, ele foi consagrado, em 1932, com a divina Night and Day.

Night and Day já foi gravada por, por exemplo, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, U2 e Rod Stewart. É uma das minhas músicas preferidas e, um dia, ainda reunirei todas as versões em um só CD, para ouvi-las infinitamente.

Por enquanto, fiquemos com um clip de De-Lovely - Vidas e Amores de Cole Porter, de 2004, que traz Kevin Kline no papel principal. A seqüência mostra a montagem do musical The Gay Divorce, que Porter escreveu em 1932. Segundo consta, o ator do musical não conseguia acertar o tom da música. O próprio Porter teve de intervir e ensiná-lo a cantar:
